FOLKS’ SONGS is a new E.P. from the trans music-making world of OVER/AT. It comprises three exclusive, newly commissioned audio pieces by three Scotland-based trans, non-binary, or other gender-minority artists: new songs for/by/with the Folk. It is unlike any trans music-making which has come before it in Scotland.
This EP shines a light on the different ways we – trans, non-binary, and other gender-minority people – are using our voices. It features musicians with backgrounds from punk to trad, and in particular it loves the beauty of our untrained and unheard voices, freeforming outside of social expectation. You will hear inventive (non-)traditional music, angry punk howls, and delicious beats.
This E.P. is being produced as part of Sound and Music’s Composer-Curator programme, in partnership with Supersonic Festival.
This E.P. is being launched in partnership with The Wire.
OVER / AT gratefully acknowledges the support of Creative Scotland, Arts Council England, and PRS Foundation.

ABOUT OVER / AT
OVER / AT is a new concert series and trans music-making world. It launched at the Glad Café in the distant land of March 2020. We are back for a big, bad, and dangerous 2021 season. This year, we are focusing on the voice – how we speak, sing, hum, shout, and howl. We aim to make work by/with/for trans, non-binary, and other gender minority folks.

“With Julius, he was based in repetition, but here was a spirit of openness and improvisation. His scores, if they were written out that way, were often like jazz scores. He loved multiplying instruments – four pianos, ten cellos – so there was a real feeling of the presence of the instrument, not just using an instrument in some kind of equation, as a means to an end.” ~ Mary Jane Leach

Haunting and beautiful, with an abiding sense of melancholia without menace, this is a contemporary air inspired from a place ancient in location and spirit. The music is at times reminiscent of Karl Jenkins, at others of Lamb, but is fresh and original while simultaneously honouring the historic. A very fine thing. elsiemaydunn
